1969 on the heels of Dr. King’s tragic assassination, the Council unanimously agreed to dedicate the Community Center and Park in North Central #SanMateo as a memorial to Dr. King. This was a symbolic victory that affirmed our commitment to diversity and justice.
At the meeting, Councilmember Murry read aloud a letter from Rev. Cooper of St. James AME Zion Church expressing his hope that the recreation center would not be segregated, since this would be antithetical to Dr. King's teachings.
On January 25th, 2020 we celebrated the Grand Re-Opening of King Park with new turf, picnic tables, lighting, b-ball court and bike racks!
Thank you to all the community members, workers, staff and council members who made this happen! #dreamtoreality#parksandrec #ribboncutting
