Racial Equity Mural Celebrates San Mateo's Diversity

Unveiling the Downtown Public Mural (October 2023)

This is legacy work. Years ago, San Mateo community member Josh Wright spoke up about #blacklivesmatter and asked our City to create a mural on racial equity. I am so proud to have carried this public art initiative forward to create a two-block street mural Downtown on our pedestrian mall. I hope this artistic celebration of our diversity creates greater empathy and curiosity about our history and community. These investments in our values and Downtown help ensure economic vitality for our local businesses.

This October, we unveiled the mural with a ribbon cutting and it was a peak highlight in my time as Mayor to see the magnificent joy and pride that this art inspires in our community. Thank you to artist Rafael Blanco and his team, our wonderful City staff, and the dedicated Downtown San Mateo Business Association for making this dream come true.

Thank you to KCSM Radio for highlighting the background story of how this art project came to be and to Josh Wright who had the vision and courage to speak up!
